Four Bangladesh districts facing flooding risks

Dhaka, April 18, 2022: The water of two rivers in the northeastern part of the country, which is in the Sylhet region, is flowing over the danger zone.

Four districts in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona and Kishoreganj are at high risk of flash floods due to heavy rains in the Indian subcontinent upstream.

This information has been given in the river situation and forecast report of Haor area of ​​flood forecasting and warning center of Bangladesh Water Development Board on Saturday. It is said that the water level of major rivers of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona and Habiganj districts is increasing.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and the Indian Meteorological Department's mathematical model, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in the next 48 hours in the northeastern part of the country and adjoining parts of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh in India.

Flood forecasting and warning center executive engineer. Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan said that in the next 24 hours, the water level in major rivers of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Habiganj and Moulvibazar districts in the north-eastern part of the country could rise sharply due to heavy rainfall.

Surma river may be near the danger line in Sunamganj district. The Dhanu-Baulai river may cross the danger line at several points in Netrokona district. He said there was a high risk of flash floods in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona and Kishoreganj districts in the next 24 to 72 hours.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, the Surma River is flowing over the danger zone at Kanaighat and Sylhet Point. Besides, the water of Sarigowain river is flowing over the danger line at Sarighat and Goainghat.
