Four sentenced to death for smuggling yaba

District and Sessions Judge Court of Cox's Bazar ordered death penalty to four people including Rohingyas for smuggling 13 lakh Yaba. At the same time each has been fined Tk 50,000. On Wednesday (November 16) around 12:30 noon, Judge Mohammad Ismail of the District and Sessions Judge Court of Cox's Bazar announced the verdict.

Those sentenced to death are Md Ayaz (34) of Balukhali Rohingya Refugee Camp-13 in Cox's Bazar, Billal (37) of Power House Dakshin Hajipara of Ward No. 2 in Jhelongja Union of Cox's Bazar Sadar Upazila, Azimullah (43) of Pancharam Para of Manikchari Upazila in Khagrachhari and Abul Kalam (37) of the same area. They were present in court when the verdict was announced.

District and Sessions Judge Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Faridul Alam said that on August 23, 2020, a team of RAB-15 raided and arrested Ayaz and Billal from a fishing boat. At this time, four or five others escaped. Later, after searching the fishing boat, 13 lakh yaba and 10 thousand cash were recovered. In this incident, Naib Subedar of RAB-15 Md. Harunor Rashid filed a case in Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station accusing two people and 4-5 unknown people.

In this incident, Ayaz and Billal admitted their guilt and gave a statement in court under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. They revealed the identity of absconding accused Azimullah and Abul Kalam in their deposition. The investigating officer of the case and SI of RAB-15 Mohammad Sohail Sikder gave the charge sheet of the case to the court on June 10, 2021. In continuation of this, the court gave this judgment today.
