Dhaka, Jan 26: France and Germany have expressed interests in strengthening ties with Bangladesh.

French ambassador Marie Masdupuy and German ambassador Achim Troster expressed this interest during a courtesy meeting with Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud on Thursday.

At noon, the ambassador of France and then Germany came to meet the newly appointed minister at Segunbagicha in the capital. The two ambassadors handed over the congratulatory message of the French President and the German Chancellor to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina for being re-elected in the 12th national election.

After the meeting, the foreign minister told reporters that France and Germany are important development partners of Bangladesh. These two countries are among the countries that recognized us immediately after independence. Bangladesh's second largest export market is Germany. France is also on the rise in our export trade, especially in ready-made garments. Discussed broadening our 'business basket' to deepen the relationship.

He said, "There was a discussion with the French ambassador about buying Airbus. It was discussed during the visit of the President of France. When our economy permits, we will."

Hasan Mahmud said in the discussion with the German ambassador, Germany took our war children after the liberation war. France also took some. Those children were born because of the brutality of the Pakistani forces during the liberation war. Germany took in large numbers of orphaned children at the time. Many of our freedom fighters were also crippled. Most of them were treated by Germany. I thanked them for this.

A memorandum of understanding regarding the second satellite for Bangladesh was signed during President Macron's visit - when asked about its progress, the minister said, "Bangabandhu Satellite-2 is our priority. In particular, for sending weather messages, this is very important for security issues. An MoU was signed on this in September. Among these was our election. Surely the work will progress quickly."
