Give more support to education, skill development and infrastructure: PM to ADB President

Dhaka, March 15: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought more assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in the education, skill development and infrastructure sectors.

A visiting delegation of the bank led by ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa sought this assistance during a courtesy meeting with the Prime Minister at Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka today.

Prime Minister's speechwriter Md. Nazrul Islam briefed the journalists. In the meeting, Sheikh Hasina said that Bangladesh is emphasizing on education, skill development and infrastructure. At the time, she sought more assistance in various projects, mainly in the education, skill development and infrastructure sectors. Talking about the programme related to stipend and mid-day meal for school students, Sheikh Hasina urged ADB to come forward to help in this regard. The Prime Minister asked to select a vice-president of ADB from Bangladesh. At this time, she thanked this regional development bank for always being by Bangladesh's side, especially in difficult times and for helping the country's economic development.

ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa said, "ADB has been working with Bangladesh since 1973 as a reliable partner."

"ADB will work more closely with Bangladesh. This partnership between us will be strengthened in the coming days," he added.

He said that ADB will stand by Bangladesh's journey to become an upper-middle-income country by 2031 and a developed, prosperous and smart Bangladesh by 2041.

The ADB chief praised Bangladesh's macroeconomic management in dealing with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war and the outstanding socio-economic development of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He praised Bangladesh's efforts to successfully tackle the Covid-19 pandemic by maintaining balance of life and livelihood.
