Dhaka, July 29: Today is Saturday 10th of Muharram Holy Ashura. The holy Ashura is being observed across the country today with various programmes in due religious dignity and solemnity. The 'sorrowful and heartbreaking event' of Karbala has special religious significance for the world Muslim community. In addition to being a symbol of sacrifice and mourning, this day is celebrated with importance in the Muslim world as a special holy day.

On the occasion of Ashura, President Md. Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages highlighting the significance of Ashura.

Saturday has been declared a public holiday on the occasion of Holy Ashura. On this occasion special articles will be published in various national dailies today. Besides, various private media and satellite TV channels including Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television will broadcast special programmes highlighting the significance of this day.

On the occasion of Holy Ashura, Islamic Foundation has organized a discussion meeting and prayer meeting on 'Importance and Significance of Holy Ashura' at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Saturday at 1:30 pm.

In his speech on the occasion of the day, President Md. Shahabuddin said, May the great teachings of the holy Ashura be reflected in the lives of all of us. The eternal words of Ashura, burning in the memory of the tragic event of Karbala, inspire us to speak out against injustice and tyranny, inspire us to follow the path of truth and beauty. I hope that the great teachings of the Holy Ashura will be reflected in the lives of all of us.

In her speech on the occasion of Ashura, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "Let's take the message of the holy Ashura in our hearts and participate in public welfare work to build a non-discriminatory, happy, prosperous and peaceful Sonar Bangla i.e. Smart Bangladesh as dreamed by the greatest Bengali of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman."
