Dhaka, January 16: Assistant Secretary for South Asia Affairs of the US Department of State Donald Lu said, "The United States wants to strengthen friendship with Bangladesh and Bangladesh has also extended its hand." The same message has been given by Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen and Foreign Secretary Masood Bin Momen to improve the relationship between the two countries.

On Sunday (January 15), the two officials faced the journalists after a meeting with the Foreign Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Foreign Minister also joined them. US Ambassador Peter Haas was also present at this time.

Minister AK Abdul Momen said, "There has been a constructive discussion between us. America is our old friend. We discussed how we can take the relationship forward for the next 50 years."

Foreign Secretary Masoud Bin Momen said, "Like last year, we have agreed that we will work to take the relationship to the next level to achieve the goals through a time-bound mechanism."

Donald Lu said, "I am here to strengthen the friendship of the two countries; While the present world is struggling for peace and justice."

Donald Lu arrived in Dhaka from India on Saturday. He came to Dhaka for the first time in March last year as a traveling companion of Under-Secretary Nuland. Although he has visited several countries in the region before, this is his first solo visit to Dhaka.

In December 2021, the United States imposed sanctions on the elite force RAB and six officials of the elite force. In this regard, Donald Lu said, "There was a good discussion about RAB. If you look at the Human Rights Watch statement, you will see that RAB's remarkable progress in reducing the number of extrajudicial killings has been acknowledged. We also acknowledge this progress. It is a remarkable work. This proves that RAB is doing a good job in maintaining law and order and suppressing terrorism by upholding human rights."

No decision has been made yet on access to Bangladeshi products in the US market. In this regard, Donald Lu said, "If Congress takes a decision on the restoration of GSP, then Bangladesh will be on the first list."

Currently, no country enjoys market benefits under the GSP in the United States.
