Dhaka, May 10: The two-day Indian Ocean Conference is being held in Dhaka from next Friday, May 12. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is coming to Dhaka on a short visit to attend the conference. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed this on Tuesday.

According to a diplomatic source in Dhaka, the Indian Foundation, a research institute affiliated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India, has jointly organized the Indian Ocean Conference. The conference will be held in Dhaka on May 12 and 13. About 30 Ministers, Ministers of State and Deputy Ministers are expected to attend the conference, including a President of Mauritius, Vice President of Maldives, and External Affairs Minister of India.

A senior official of the ministry said that the Indian External Affairs Minister will come to Dhaka on May 11. The next day he will attend the opening ceremony of the conference and leave Dhaka on the same day.

An official of the ministry said that the foreign minister of India is coming. Attending the conference is his main engagement. Apart from this, there is a possibility of Jaishankar's courtesy meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen.

Regarding the bilateral talks during Jaishankar's visit, this official said that the visit is not bilateral. He is coming to attend the conference. Bilateral talks do not take place in these visits. A 'Courtesy Call On' can be done if the guest wants. If he wants to meet someone or suggest we will arrange it.

Another diplomatic source says Jaishankar is likely to have a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Finally, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Dhaka in late April last year. As Foreign Minister, he visited Dhaka for the first time in 2019. Then the Indian Foreign Minister came to Bangladesh in March 2021.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Indian Ocean Conference, which will begin with the theme of 'Peace, Prosperity and Partnership for a Sustainable Future', at a hotel in the capital. Although the conference was mainly organized for the coastal countries of the Indian Ocean, it will discuss various important issues in the changing global context.

It should be noted that five Indian Ocean Conferences have been held so far. This conference was first started in Singapore in 2016. Later, the fifth conference was held in Sri Lanka in 2017, Vietnam in 2018, Maldives in 2019 and United Arab Emirates in 2021. The sixth conference is going to be held in Dhaka after a gap of one year.
