Jhenaidah elects first transgender UP chairman

Dhaka, November 29: Jhenaidah has elected its first transgender Union Parishad chairman on Sunday, according to reports.

Nazrul Islam Ritu, an independent candidate with pineapple symbol, has been elected the UP chairman of Trilochanpur union in Jhenaidah's Kaliganj upazila.

Ritu, received 5,052 more votes than her closest rival, Awami League-backed candidate Nazrul Islam Sana.

The winner garnered 9,569 votes against the Sana's 4,517 in the third phase of the Union Parishad polls, according to the Daily Star.

On November 13, Shahida Begum became the first member of the transgender community to be elected to office in Bangladesh after she won the reserved seat for women from wards four, five, and six of Maguraghona Union Parishad-6 in Khulna.

She won by a margin of 2,740 votes, while competing against four women candidates.
