Dhaka, Sept 12: Bangladesh and France issued a joint statement after a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and French President Emmanuel Macron. The joint statement was issued on Monday, September 11. It condemned unconstitutional changes of government in both countries and illegal military occupation of any country.

The statement stated that Bangladesh and France have deep friendship based on common democratic values, promotion of human rights, sustainable peace and sustainable development. This friendship is rooted in a multi-layered historical bond. Among them, former French Culture Minister Andre Marlow's memorable call for support to Bangladesh during the Liberation War in 1971 and later his meeting with Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in April 1973 are noteworthy. Emmanuel Macron visited Bangladesh on September 10-11 at the invitation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with her visit to France in November 2021.

The President of France and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh held a meeting in Dhaka to strengthen bilateral relations. They share a common commitment to building a trusting and meaningful partnership through people-centered connectivity and prosperity in support of global peace and security, resilience and strategic autonomy.

Both countries recognize the need for a more inclusive governance of the global financing architecture, following four core principles. They are to ensure that no country has to choose between fighting poverty and saving the planet. Ensuring country ownership of the transition strategy. Providing a fiscal stimulus with improved and predictable resources to support the weak economy. and raising additional private capital to achieve a net-zero and nature-positive world.

Bangladesh and France believe that global efforts to facilitate access to climate finance for developing countries should be accelerated. Bangladesh and France support the implementation of new funding mechanisms to support developing countries vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change against climate risks.

Bangladesh and France have agreed to join their efforts to ensure a results-based COP28 in Dubai this year. It also reiterates the need to set and meet ambitious targets for renewable energy production and energy efficiency worldwide.
