Dhaka, July 7: The upward trend in coronavirus infections suggests that the July caseload will surpass the tallies in June and April. According to the Department of Health, if the number of patients increases like this everyday, they will have to face a difficult challenge ahead. Even the supply of oxygen will be challenged.

This was stated by Prof. Dr. Nazmul Islam, Line Director and Spokesperson of the Department of Health at a regular bulletin on Wednesday (July 7) at noon.

He said 21,629 new patients tested Covid-19 positive across Bangladesh in January, 2021. In April that number exceeded the 1,00,000-mark. In June, 1,12,718 people were identified as Covid-19 positive.

The first six days of July alone has accounted for 53,148 new coronavirus patients. If this upward trend continues, the statistics show that the number of patients in July will exceed the total individual cases in the month of June and April.

He said at the beginning of the first week of this month, the rate of corona infection in the country was just over 25 percent. But on July 6, the detection rate stood at 31.46 percent. On June 29, 8,622 people were identified as Covid-19 positive, which exceeded the 11,000-mark on Tuesday (July 6).

Nazmul Islam said the number of daily Covid-19 death toll in the country has remained above the 100-mark for a week. On June 30, 115 people died in the country. After that, the number of deaths has been above one hundred every day.

On July 6, 163 people had died. The previous day, 164 people had died. In all, 15,392 people had died in the country till July 6.

"Every death makes us sad. If we do not learn from these deaths, then this death, this pain will become worthless and meaningless," he said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health has said that more people over the age of 50 are getting infected and dying in the country due to coronavirus.

Professor Dr. Nazmul Islam said, "If we analyse the deaths which were reported between July 5 to July 6, the group with the most fatalities is the one with over 60 years. On that day, we saw the loss of 91 precious lives in the sixties. There were 30 people in their fifties. In all, those in their 50s and 60s are the most affected and dying due to Covid-19."
