Dhaka, November 10: A court has sentenced four people, including retired Colonel Shahid Uddin Chowdhury, to life imprisonment in an arms law case. Judge Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal No. 4 pronounced the verdict on Tuesday.

The others convicted are Farzana Anjum Khan, wife of Shahid Uddin, Syed Akidul Ali and Khorshed Alam Patwari.

After the verdict was announced, Akidul and Khorshed were sent to jail with sentencing warrants.

Colonel Shahid and Farzana Anjum Khan are absconding. The court has issued arrest warrants and sentencing warrants against them.

Chief Prosecutor Abdullah Abu told the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court that the judge took nine witnesses for the state in the case. The accused did not testify.

The verdict said anti-government and anti-state activities had been going on for a long time from a house in Baridhara under Cantonment Police Station in the name of Shahid Uddin Chowdhury's wife. Police raided the house on January 17 last year and recovered a pistol with five rounds of magazines, an RKT pistol with six rounds of magazines, a shotgun, two rounds of ammunition and two magazines with shortguns.

Counter Terrorism Unit Inspector (Retd) Biplob Kishore Shil filed a case with the Cantonment Police Station on the same day. Following the investigation, the chargesheet was filed in the court on April 4 last year. On August 13 last year, the court framed charges against the accused and ordered the trial to begin.
