Dhaka, August 16: Due to insufficient number of vaccine doses, mass vaccination activities has been stalled for the time being. If enough vaccines are available, this activity will start again. Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque made the remarks after a program at the Mohakhali BCPS auditorium on Sunday (August 15).

"We are signing an agreement with China to get the vaccine," he said. "An agreement on joint vaccine production will be reached next week. We have a vaccination agreement with Russia. Now we waiting for the jabs. India owes 2 crore 30 lakhs. No activities are stuck. Subject to receiving the vaccine, the mass vaccination activities will start again."

"We have received 54 lakh vaccines this week," he said. "Another 50 lakh vaccines will arrive in the last week of the month. In the meantime, our normal vaccination activities will continue."

Zahid Maleque said, “We have got a lot of good results in taking vaccination activities at the village level. They have become aware of the vaccine. Their interest has grown and they want to get vaccinated now. They understand that older people need to be vaccinated first."

The health minister said, "People in their fifties should be brought under the vaccine first. Because, they are most affected. Ninety percent of the deaths are among older people. More women are dying, most of them are middle-aged."

"We've seen more women die between the ages of 40 and 60," he said. "Their mortality rate has become almost equal to that of men. This is very alarming, so we have to keep this in mind. In addition to medicines, women also need to be vaccinated more. They also need to be monitored for treatment. We are thinking about it and giving priority to women in vaccination."

Asked about the restriction recommendations of the Covid-19 National Technical Committee, the minister said, "The National Advisory Committee always gives good advice. They said it would have been better if our lockdown had lasted a few more days. But we have to look in all directions again. We have to make decisions based on our livelihood. We have said before that life is worth more than livelihood."

"Now that everything is open, we have no choice but to follow the hygiene rules," he said.
