MC College witnesses protests over gangrape in hostel

Sylhet: BCL leaders, activists and ordinary students have demonstrated after a housewife was gang-raped while her husband was detained at the Sylhet MC College dormitory. At around 12 noon on Saturday (September 27), more than 200 BCL activists and students set fire to tires in front of the college and blocked the Sylhet-Tamabil highway, demanding immediate arrest of those involved in the incident.

At that time, they chanted slogans like 'Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu', 'Sheikh Hasina has no place for rapists in Bengal', 'I want the killer-rapist to be hanged'. They blocked the road and protested till 2 pm. MC College BCL leaders Delwar Hossain, Hossain Ahmed, Russell Ahmed, Shamim Ali and Altaf Hossain Morad led it.


The students complained about how the college authorities kept the dormitory open even after the college was closed due to the Corona situation. Why the dormitory was not closed even though the college authorities were aware of these criminal activities. Today, traditional schools are stigmatized. The students demanded immediate arrest of those involved in the gang-rape incident.


Meanwhile, a large number of police have been deployed at MC College and dormitory to avoid any untoward incident.


It is learned that the housewife was gang-raped while visiting her husband at MC College in Sylhet on Friday. The incident took place at the college's dormitory in Tilagarh area around 10 pm. The housewife was picked up from the campus and taken to a dormitory and raped, police said. The victim's husband filed a case with the city's Shahparan police station. Six BCL activists and three unidentified persons have been accused in the case.


Earlier on Friday, police raided the dormitory at around 2am and recovered domestic and foreign weapons from the room of Saifur Rahman, a BCL activist accused of mass protest. A foreign pistol, four ramdas and two iron pipes were recovered during the operation. Another case has been filed against Chhatra League activist Saifur Rahman under the Arms Act.


College authorities have ordered all students to leave the dormitory after the incident of gang rape. Instructions have been given to leave the dormitory by 12 noon on Saturday (September 28).


MC College Hostel Super Md. Jamal Uddin said, an emergency meeting is going on at the call of the principal of MC College. The next course of action will be decided at the meeting.
