Own representative, Dhaka, December 21: Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has said that the perception among the people that miniket rice is made by cutting thick rice is not correct. The minister made the remarks at a press conference at the Secretariat on Monday (December 20) on the occasion of the International Nutrition Olympiad.

The High Court has demanded a list of those who are selling rice in the names of Miniket and Nazirshail by cutting broader rice variants. Reacting to it, the minister said, "There is no such thing as an original miniket. In the case of narrow miniket, the two types of paddy- Gerashail and Shampakatari. There is not even a paddy called Nazirshail."

Addressing reporters, he said, "You write - this white shiny rice has no nutrients. Eat red rice. It is not right to cut rice into small pieces. You have to match, you have to observe. Cut the rice but do not make it smaller. If it loses weight the seller will be looser. They only polish, polish doesn't reduce the weight."

Earlier, Food Secretary Moshammat Nazmanara Khanum said, "We have already done some research work. It is true that rice is being sold in the market under the name of Miniket, but there is no rice under the name of Miniket. The Ministry of Agriculture says that at one time rice was coming from abroad by Miniket, then the people of the village named it Miniket after the name of that kit. Now Bri-28 and 29 paddy and coarse paddy are called miniket."
