Dhaka, April 7: Expressing dissatisfaction over the progress of Akhaura-Agartala dual gauge railway construction, Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon has directed to complete the work by next December. The instructions were given to the contractor on Thursday (April 7) after inspecting the project work with Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami in Shivnagar area bordering India in Akhaura upazila of Brahmanbaria.

Responding to a question from reporters, the Railway Minister said, "This is a very important project for both our countries." We are both disappointed to see the progress of the work. It has been informed that the work of laying the railway will be completed by next June. The rest of the work may take a little longer.

He said the contractor said he could not finish the job because of Covid - he could not discard the reason. "We have to accept it in terms of circumstances. There is time until next June. But the real situation is that if we can finish the work by next December, we will be happy."

"Hopefully the contractor will understand our concerns," he added.

Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami said the Prime Ministers of the two countries were attaching utmost importance to the implementation of the project. Hopefully the work will be completed within the extended time. My colleagues are coming here regularly to see the progress of the work. We are also under pressure to complete the project quickly.
