Dhaka, Oct 3, 2021: A Chittagong court has sentenced accused Jabed Iqbal to life imprisonment and fugitive Boma Mizan to death in a bomb attack at a police check post.

At the same time, accused Jabed was sentenced to two more years imprisonment for non-payment of a fine of Tk 200,000. Judge Abdul Halim of the Chittagong Anti-Terrorism Tribunal pronounced the verdict on Sunday (October 3rd).

Prosecutor Manoranjan Das said the court had sentenced Jabed Iqbal to life imprisonment and fugitive Boma Mizan to death in a sensational bomb attack case. Jabed Iqbal was present in the court when the verdict was announced.

"We are not entirely satisfied with the verdict," he added. Because I also expected the death sentence of accused Jabed. He himself testified in court about the attack. However, the court considered his overall case and sentenced him to life imprisonment. We will decide on the appeal in the High Court in consultation with the appropriate authorities.

According to court sources, the militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) carried out a bomb attack on a Chittagong court police check post on November 29, 2005. Police constable Rajib Barua and justice footballer Shahabuddin Ahmed were killed.

A murder case was filed at Kotwali police station. In that case, Hla Ching Pru, the then Inspector of City Detective Police (DB), filed a chargesheet against the five on May 16, 2016. The case was framed on July 16 of the same year.

In the meantime, the names of three accused were dropped from the case as the death sentence was effective in another case. They are JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman, his second-in-command Siddiqur Rahman alias Bangla Bhai and JMB military commander Ataur Rahman Sunny.

Besides, Jahidul Islam alias Bomaru Mizan fugitive and Jabed Iqbal are in Chittagong jail among the other two accused. After presenting the arguments of the state and the accused on September 21, the court fixed today (Sunday) as the date of pronouncement of the verdict.
