Mobile internet users down by 35 lakhs in 5 months

Dhaka, March 26: Mobile internet subscribers are decreasing in the country. According to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC)'s latest published estimates, 3.5 million mobile internet subscribers have dropped in a span of five months. However, at the same time the number of ISP and PSTN Internet users has increased.

Consumers say that they have reduced their usage after mobile operators increased internet prices in the name of package adjustments. They are using WiFi at home, and not turning on mobile data unless absolutely necessary.

According to BTRC data, there were 11 crore 97 lakh 70 thousand mobile internet users in the country in September, 2023. The ogranization has published the account for the month of January this year. In January, mobile internet subscribers in the country fell to 11 crore 63 lakh. BTRC has not released the February data yet. However, several officials of the company said that the number of mobile internet subscribers decreased further in February.

The number of internet subscribers is published every month on the official website of BTRC. According to the information published on the website - in August 2023, mobile internet subscribers increased to 11 crore 97 lakh 90 thousand. Then from September the number of customers started to decrease. In September, it fell by 20,000 to 11 crore 97 lakh 70 thousand. In October, number of customers fell by 3 lakh 60 thousand to 11 crore 94 lakh 10 thousand. About 5 lakh customers dropped in November. There were 11 crore 89 lakh 60 thousand subscribers in that month. Then in December it decreased to 11 lakh 84 lakh 90 thousand. In the last month of January, the number of mobile internet subscribers decreased to 11 crore 60 lakh and 30 thousand.
