Moghbazar blast: Death toll jumps to nine

Dhaka, June 30: The death toll in the Moghbazar blast rose to nine after another victim, who suffered burns, died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, reports said.

The deceased has been identified as Imran Hossain, 25.

According to doctors, he had sustained 90 percent burns and died while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the institute around 6:40am on Wednesday.

The death was confirmed by Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost in-charge, Inspector Bachchu Mia.

The deceased was an employee at a Bengal Meat outlet on the ground floor of the collapsed building.

Imran was a resident of Tangail. He lived in a rented house with his wife, Tamanna, in Moghbazar.

His body has been kept at DMCH morgue for autopsy.

The blast has also injured 66 others, while damaging nearby buildings and cars.

A case has been filed by SI Rezaul Karim on Tuesday over the explosion. The cop has named several unidentified persons as accused for causing death by negligence, Ramna Model police station OC Monirul Islam said.

According to him, the accused individuals could be anyone connected to the building- owner, tenants or utility people- and the blast.

The Police Headquarters have also informed about the formation of a seven-member team to investigate the explosion, in a media statement on Monday.

The team would coordinate with a five-member committee formed by the Fire Service and Civil Defence to probe the blast, the statement added.

Both the teams will submit their reports within seven working days.
