More than 700 educational institutions in Sylhet closed due to floods

Dhaka, May 20: The flood waters caused by the hill slope have also infiltrated the educational institutions in Sylhet. Due to which the teaching activities of more than seven hundred educational institutions of the district have been stopped without any official announcement.

Already more than five hundred educational institutions in the district have been inundated by the flood waters. On the other hand, shelters for flood victims have been opened in more than 200 educational institutions. Due to this, the teaching activities of at least seven hundred educational institutions of the district are closed.

Heavy rains started in Sylhet on May 10, which is still ongoing. At the same time the slope is coming down from the upper. As a result, the lower part of Sylhet started sinking from last 11th May. The city of Sylhet started sinking from last 13th May. Now the flood situation has taken a terrible turn.

Lama Akilpur Government Primary School in Sylhet Sadar Upazila has been submerged in flood waters. The headmistress of the school, Sultana Rabia, said there was knee-deep water inside her school's classroom. That is why the school has been closed since last Monday. She added that the situation was similar in schools around him due to the recent floods. Teaching has stopped as roads and educational institutions have been submerged. The headmaster said he had not seen so much water in the last 18 years.

Several kindergartens in the city are also closed due to the floods. At least 12 educational institutions including Al Medina International School and College on Nawab Road in Ward 10 of the city, Jalalabad School and College in Kalapara, Sunrise School in Lamapara, Ghasitula Madrasa, Ghasitula Greenbird School are closed in this ward.

According to the Sylhet District Primary Education Office, there are 1,477 primary schools in the district. Of these, 400 were flooded till Thursday morning. As a result, teaching in these schools is closed. Gowainghat, Kanaighat, Jaintapur, Zakiganj, Companiganj and Sylhet Sadar upazilas have been flooded the most.

District Primary Education Officer Shakhawat Hossain Ershad said that the primary schools in the flood-hit areas were closed due to floods. The higher authorities have been informed about the flooding of educational institutions. He further said that no instruction has been issued to stop teaching in all the schools of the district. Schools that have not yet been flooded have been asked to be ready for use as shelters if necessary.
