Mother along with her two children swept away in Sunamganj river, mother's body recovered

Dhaka, June 20: A mother along with her two children were swept away by the Dharain river in Sunamganj's Shalla upazila. The incident took place under the bridge adjacent to Shalla Government College around 7:30 pm on Monday.

According to police sources, the mother and her two children were coming through the road under the bridge next to Shalla Government College at 7:30 in the evening. They were swept away by the strong current.

Today, Tuesday, around 11 am, the body of the woman was recovered from the side of Maushibadh, but her two children are still missing. Local administration and police are working to rescue them.

Deceased Rani Das was the wife of Ratindra Das of Bilpur village of the upazila. Her son Bijoy Das (5) and daughter Jaba Rani (7) are still missing.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shalla police station Md. Aminul Islam confirmed the truth of the incident and said that the administration is working to rescue the two missing children.

Meanwhile, Sylhet has been receiving heavy rainfall for six consecutive days. Due to this, waterlogging has occurred in many parts of the city. Water has already entered some polling stations. Meanwhile, the water of Surma river is increasing. As a result, there is a danger of flooding in Sylhet. So the Election Commission is closely monitoring the situation. Several central leaders of the ruling party Awami League are staying in Sylhet. They are also worried about the rain.

Polling will be held in 190 centers on June 21. Among these, water entered five-six centers on Monday. Waterlogging has occurred in the grounds of some polling stations. As the rain continues, there is fear of inundation of several more centres.

On Monday afternoon, it was found that Nachiba Khatun High Girls School and another primary school nearby were submerged in water in the Vartakhla area of Sylhet city. Water has also entered the classrooms of the schools. Maiachar Government Primary School in Kumargaon area has also been submerged in water. The Election Commission has determined these three schools as polling stations for the city elections.
