Own Correspondent, Dhaka, August 27: Today is the 46th death anniversary of National poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

He breathed his last on August 27, 1976 at Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (formerly PG Hospital). The poet was buried with state honour next to the central mosque of Dhaka University (DU).

On the occasion of the poet's death anniversary, the artist-literary, social and cultural organizations of the country have organized various events. The programmes include wreath-laying at the poet's tomb adjacent to Dhaka University Central Mosque, Fateha recitation, doa mahfil, discussions, and cultural programmes.

On this occasion, Kabi Nazrul Institute organized a discussion meeting and cultural programme at Rabindra Sarovar in Dhanmondi at 5:30 pm on Saturday. Bangladesh Radio, Television and various private television channels have taken the initiative to air special programs on the occasion of the poet's death anniversary.

The independence-lover poet was born on the 11th day of 1306 Bengali (May 24, 1899) in Churulia village of Burdwan district of West Bengal. His childhood nickname was 'Dukhu Mia'. His father's name was Kazi Fakir Ahmed, and his mother's name was Zaheda Khatun. Although Nazrul is known as a rebel poet to Bengali literature fans, he has left his own signature in poetry, music, novels, stories, plays, essays, and films. He was also a journalist, singer, and actor. His countless ragas and raginis are immortalized in music.

Love, Betrayal, Communism, and Awakening poet Kazi Nazrul Islam's poems and songs inspired the nation in the struggle against exploitation and deprivation. His songs and poems were a source of inspiration during the liberation war. Nazrul's poetry, songs, and literary works created a renaissance in Bengali literature. He was a pioneer writer of secular consciousness. His writings played a major role in developing non-communal spirit in national life.

After the birth of independent Bangladesh, on May 24, 1972, on the initiative of the then Bangladesh president, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, with the permission of the Indian government, poet Nazrul and his family were brought to Dhaka. He was given the status of National Poet. For his contribution to Bengali literature and culture, Dhaka University awarded the poet an honorary D-Litt degree in a special convocation on December 9, 1974. The poet was awarded the Ekushe Padak on February 21 of the same year.
