New Market clash: 1200 accused in two cases

Dhaka, April 21: Police have filed two cases in connection with the clash between Dhaka College students and businessmen in the New Market area of the capital.

One was charged under the Explosives Act and the other with assault on police. A total of 1,200 people, including businessmen, employees of New Market and students of Dhaka College, have been accused in the two cases.

On Thursday, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Newmarket Police Station S M Qayyum said 300 unidentified persons, including 24 businessmen and employees, had lodged a complaint against the police in connection with the clash between Dhaka College students and businessmen. Besides, 700 students of Dhaka College have been accused in the same case as anonymous.

He further added that in another case filed under the Explosives Act, between 150 and 200 unidentified persons have been charged. The plaintiffs in the two cases are Sub-Inspector (SI) of Newmarket Police Station Mehedi Hasan and Inspector (Investigation) Yamin Kabir.

Earlier, on Monday (April 17) at around midnight, the clash between the students of Dhaka College and the traders and shop workers of New Market started. The clash lasted for about two and a half hours. After that the situation came under control at night but on Tuesday (April 18) the clashes started again after 10 am. Which lasted until evening.

More than 50 people from both sides were injured and are being treated at the hospital. Some of them are in critical condition. A courier named Nahid Hasan died at the hospital after being seriously injured in the clash.

It is learned that Nahid was on his way to work after leaving his house in Kamrangirchar on Tuesday. He was seriously injured in the clash. He later died at the hospital. Nahid's father Md Nadim Hossain has filed a murder case with the New Market police station. He mentioned an unknown accused in the case.

On the other hand, a shop worker named Md. Mursalin (24) who was injured in the collision died. He died at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital at 4.40 am on Thursday. Two people died in the incident.
