Dhaka, April 23: A court has granted a three-day remand to BNP leader Advocate Maqbool Hossain, who was arrested in a case of obstructing police work in a clash between students and New Market traders and shop workers.

He was produced in the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Saturday (April 23). New Market Police Inspector Haldar Arpit Thakur then requested to remand him for seven days for proper investigation of the case. Following the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid granted him a three-day remand.

Earlier on Friday (April 22) afternoon, Maqbool Hossain was arrested from his Dhanmondi home in the capital. After his arrest, he was taken to the DB office on Minto Road for questioning. He was handed over to New Market police at night.

Businessmen and employees of New Market clashed with students of Dhaka College at around 12 midnight on April 19. The clash lasted for about two and a half hours. After that, the situation came under control at night, but after 10 am on April 19, the clashes started again, which continued till evening.

More than 50 people from both sides were injured in the incident. Two people have so far died in the clashes. One of them is a deliveryman, the other is a shop employee.

The clashes erupted between employees of two stores, Welcome and Capital Fastfood, inside New Market. Those shops are allotted in the name of Maqbool from two city corporations. However, Maqbool did not run any shop himself. Rafiqul Islam and Shahidul Islam have rented two shops. Rafiqul and Shahidul are related to each other.

The names of 24 people, including BNP leader Maqbool, have been mentioned in the case filed against them for obstructing the work of the police. The plaintiff in the case is New Market Police Inspector Yamin Kabir.
