Dhaka, January 20: No one will be able to serve news through Internet Protocol Television-IPTV and YouTube channels. Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud made the remarks at a press briefing after the DC's meeting with the Information Ministry at the Deputy Commissioners' Conference on Thursday (January 20).

"According to the broadcasting policy, no one can broadcast news through any IPTV or YouTube channel," he said. "But it is seen that news is still being served in some places through IPTV. Regular news bulletins are served there. News bulletins are also being disseminated through YouTube channels. This is against our broadcasting policy. Deputy commissioners have been instructed to keep an eye on the matter."

The information minister said, "Deputy commissioners are the lifeblood of the field administration. Government decisions are implemented in the field through the Deputy Commissioners. That is why the Deputy Commissioners Conference is very important."

He said, "In the session I ended a little while ago, there was a lot of discussion, especially on social media. As you know, about 90 million people in the country use social media, and it is growing."

Hassan Mahmood said, "Social media is as big a field of propaganda as it is of spreading propaganda or spreading rumors. If we look at the statistics of the last 7-8 years, it will be understood that all the accidents that have taken place in the country, rumors have been spread, they have been spread purposefully, all of them have been spread through social media."

He added, "We have raised the issue with the deputy commissioners. It is often seen that misleading news is spread. They spread through social media and created chaos in the country. Those issues have been raised with the DCs. Let them be active in these matters and take effective action."
