Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 13: Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud said that according to the law, online versions of newspapers and news portals cannot broadcast talk shows and news bulletins.

He was speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Sunday, "Recently, the leaders of the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) have noticed that the online version of some newspapers and online news portals online are broadcasting talk shows and even promoting some news which have no permission. We have seen that under the provisions of sub-sections two, four and six of the second paragraph of the online media policy, they cannot do such practices."

"In the digital age, giving video clips related to news is not a violation of the rules, but it does not approve of the policy of broadcasting talk shows or news bulletins at all," Dr. Hasan said.

"We registered the online versions of the newspapers without any investigation on the condition that the same news published in the newspaper would be published online, which should not be different," he said.

If ATCO gives a written objection in this regard, we will inform the concerned by mentioning the sections and sub-sections of the law, said the Broadcasting Minister.

Responding to a question about the negative comments made by the BNP and some other organizations about the proposed budget, Hasan Mahmud, joint general secretary of the Awami League, said. "For the last 13 and a half years, whenever the budget has been presented, it has been seen that some known faces, known organizations have always made negative comments about this budget."

He said, "The budget we inherited was less than Tk 80,000 crore. Now that budget has increased eight to nine times and stands at Tk 6 lakh 78 thousand 64 crore. Per capita income has increased almost five times from USD 600 to USD 2824 in 13 and a half years. The poverty rate has come down from 41 to 20 percent and the extreme poverty rate has come down to about 10 percent. That is the reality. But every time after the budget, certain individuals, institutions, organizations and the BNP and their allies never praised. So how did the country go so far in these 13 and a half years?"
