Dhaka, July 7, 2023 : Leader of the Opposition in Jatiya Sangsad and chief sponsor of Jatiya Party Roshan Ershad has expressed hope that the upcoming National Assembly elections will be participatory, free, fair and impartial. She said these things in the closing speech of the budget session of the National Parliament on Thursday.

The meeting of Parliament started under the chairmanship of Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury. Later, after the speeches of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Parliament, the Speaker read out the order of the President regarding the end of the session of the Parliament.

The leader of the opposition party said that various states, including the United States, have made statements calling for the free and fair conduct of the upcoming parliamentary elections. On the contrary, Bangladesh has said that the government is determined to hold free, fair and credible elections. The main goal of the Election Commission will be to make all the parties election oriented. How successful they are in this matter is now to be seen.

Roshan said that the new Election Commission does not have much time to hold the next national elections.

"All preparations should be completed in the meantime. We do not want a repeat of election-based violence, conflict and loss of life in the country for decades. It is expected that the Election Commission will turn the 12th parliamentary election into a 'model election' through a participatory, free, fair and impartial program," she said.

Mentioning that the national elections are still five months away, she requested to take necessary steps to make the citizens aware about voting at the field level. The opposition leader said that this year's budget is very important for three reasons.

The global situation caused by the Corona pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia war has led to an increase in oil prices and the imposition of various international restrictions. The government was forced to accept the IMF loan. Now meeting the IMF's reform conditions has created a new challenge.
