Nipah virus under control: Health Minister

Dhaka, February 14: Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque said that the Nipah virus is now under control in the country.

The minister said this at a press briefing on contemporary issues related to health care at the Secretariat on Monday (February 13).

When asked about the infection situation of the Nipah virus, the health minister said, "Nipah virus is now under control, Inshallah. We are not getting any new patients here. There was no death."

He said, "As a preparation, a unit has been set up in the chest hospital. ICU has been set up. Where Nipah or any such virus can get proper treatment. So that the infection does not spread, we made this beautiful unit."

Earlier on January 29, the health minister told reporters at the secretariat that eight people have been infected with Nipah virus this year. Five of them have died. The death rate is 70 percent. The health minister said that the infection of Nipah virus is more than last year. Later, the number of people affected by Nipah virus increased to 10. Among them, seven people died.

Doctors have said that there is no antidote to Nipah virus. There is no vaccine. Bats are carriers of the virus. One can contract Nipah virus by consuming raw date juice and any fruit eaten by bats.
