No hike in bus and launch fares

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, January 13: The public transport will operate at their half capacity as per the instructions of the cabinet department, without increasing the fares of bus and launch.

Bangladesh Road Transport Owners' Association's secretary general, Khandakar Enayet Ullah, said on Wednesday (January 12) that the government had instructed to operate public transport with half seating capacity from Thursday (January 13). So I held a meeting with the leaders of the owners' associations at my office on Wednesday to fix the bus fare. All owners have voted in favour of keeping the fares unchanged. So, passerngers will be transported at the fares fixed by BRTA from coming Saturday.

He said all the offices-courts, mills-factories are functioning in the country. If passengers are transported at the half seating capacity, there will be a transport crisis. The owners will also face losses. So, the bus owners have demanded the transport of passengers at full seating capacity with ensuring 100 percent Covid vaccination.

Meanwhile, launches will operate with half of their capacity like buses and trains, without hiking its fares.

BIWTA chairman Commodore Golam Sadeq said on Wednesday (January 12), "Following the restrictions, launches will operate at their half capacity without increasing fares." It has been already announced that buses and trains will operate at their half capacity with existing fares from coming Saturday (January 15).

Amid the rising infections of Covid-19, including the cases of Omicron, the government has imposed several restrictions across the country wit effect from Thursday (January 13).

According to the notification, trains, buses and launches can operate at their half capacity. The concerned authorities will issue specific instructions in this regard along with the date of implementation. Drivers and assistants of all types of vehicles must have their Covid-19 vaccination certificate.
