Dhaka, July 4: Finally, the much awaited SPM (Installation of Single Point Mooring with Double Pipeline) project has started the 'first filling' of crude oil. This activity started with the release of crude oil in the floating SPM installed at Maheshkhali in the Bay of Bengal around 10:30 am on Monday.

Managing Director of Eastern Refinery Ltd. Lokman said, on Monday around 10:30 am, filling started from the ship to SPM for the first time. The crude oil discharged from the ship is being taken to the shore tank at Kalamarchhara area of Maheshkhali. Then these crude oils will be taken to Patenga Eastern Refinery in Chittagong through the pipeline. Through this, commissioning and testing of the EPC contractor of the project is being completed, he said.

Meanwhile, it may take some time to bring the crude oil released through SPM from Kalamarchara Shore Tank to Eastern Refinery in Patenga, Chittagong.

According to sources, the prime minister is likely to inaugurate the pipeline oil supply program. If the prime minister's schedule is determined, these crude oils will be brought to Patenga through the pipeline.

Meanwhile, although the schedule of this activity was fixed on June 25, the preliminary operation activities had to be postponed due to rough seas. Earlier, tanker vessel 'MT Hore' carrying 81 thousand 735 tons of Arabian crude oil from Saudi Arabia reached the area adjacent to SPM in Maheshkhali on June 24.

The people concerned said that the ships which used to take more than 11 days to clear by lighterage, will now take 28-48 hours. It will take 48 hours to unload a maximum 120,000 ton ship.
