Dhaka, March 5: One lakh metric tonnes of sugar was burnt in a fire at the country's largest industrial group S Alam Group's sugar factory in Chittagong's Karnaphuli. This huge amount of sugar was imported for the upcoming Ramadan.

The industry group informed on Monday evening that the entire one lakh metric ton of raw sugar stored around the upcoming Ramadan has been burnt.

S Alam Group Executive Director Subrata Kumar Bhowmick told Jago News that one lakh metric tonnes of raw sugar was stocked for Ramadan. This sugar was imported from Brazil. The situation of the fire suggests that there is no more sugar left. As a result, it will not be possible for us to supply sugar to the market during Ramadan.

He said the fire spread around while the mill was running. We did not know anything about whether anyone was trapped inside or where the fire started. The fire was not brought under control even after three hours. The fire service workers are trying to prevent the fire from spreading to the main factory. We are also helping them.

Earlier, a fire broke out in the sugar factory named S Alam Refined Sugar Industries in the area under Karnaphuli police station at around 4:15 pm. Nine units from five local fire stations started working to control the fire at 3:53 pm on the news of the fire.

Sources in the Agrabad Control Room of the Fire Service said that nine units of the Fire Service have been working since the beginning to control the fire. Later they were joined by several units of Coast Guard and Air Force. Meanwhile, three and a half hours after the fire broke out, it could not be brought under control. In addition to the fire service, several units of the Coast Guard and the Air Force are working to extinguish the fire.
