One million workers to go abroad this year

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, April 21: This year, one million workers have the potential to find employment abroad. At present, an average of one lakh workers are migrating abroad every month, of which 70 to 80 thousand workers are going to Saudi Arabia.

Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Imran Ahmed made the remarks at an exchange meeting and Iftar with stakeholders on safe migration on Wednesday.

He said the Saudi embassy in Dhaka had issued 1,70,000 visas in the last two months. The country issued an average of 4,000 visas every day. The pace at which we were training staff was hampered by Corona's outbreak.

Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment, Dr. Ahmed Munirush Salehin, said, "We are now emphasizing on efficiency in sending workers abroad."

Fatima Nusrat Gazzali, Bangladesh Deputy Chief of Mission at the International Organization for Migration (IOM), said, "We need to look at the migration sector in Bangladesh in particular, as we see the flow of remittances."

ILO representative Leticia Webbel said that a new curriculum needs to be developed for workers so that they can use their full potential.

At the same time, other stakeholders emphasized the need to digitize the overseas employment process to ensure greater transparency in the immigration sector. They reiterated the need to send workers from Bangladesh to the labor markets of Malaysia and Libya. They also expressed hope for the Romanian labour market.

The meeting was also attended by the Head of EU Delegation to Dhaka, Head of BRAC Migration, representatives of International Organization for Migration (IOM) and International Labour Organization (ILO), representatives of civil society, journalists and others.
