Dhaka, January 31, 2021: Out of about 1.4 million students who have passed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations, about three lakh students do not have the opportunity to pursue higher education in universities and vocational institutions.

According to a 2016 University Grants Commission (UGC) report, there are 1.1 million seats in government, private and vocational higher education institutions across the country. Of these, there are 7.5 lakh seats in national universities, 160,000 in private universities and 56,000 in public universities (including medical colleges).

This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that 13 lakh 8 thousand 26 candidates have passed the examination without taking part in the examination. The results are prepared on the basis of JSC-JDC and SSC and equivalent results.

The publication of the results was inaugurated at the International Mother Language Institute on Saturday (January 30). Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced the results from Ganobhaban. Education Minister on behalf of the Prime Minister. Dipu Moni received the results from the chairmen of the education boards. Later, the Education Minister gave details of the results.

Higher education institutions are already unable to provide quality education to millions of students due to lack of adequate manpower. The teacher-student ratio is still high in higher education. The teacher-student ratio is 1:19 in public universities, 1:22 in private universities and 1:30 in institutions under national universities.

BRAC University Professor Emeritus. Manzoor Ahmed said the TSR for higher education should be 1:15. It will not be possible to ensure quality education if it exceeds this ratio.
Concerned people say that higher education institutions do not have the capacity to accommodate 1.4 million students. A maximum of 6 lakh students can be accommodated. The rest will have to go towards vocational education. However, the government had no choice but to give pass numbers to all the candidates.

If you want to know how it is possible to educate so many students in higher education institutions, the Minister of Education Dr. Dipu Moni said, ‘Not everyone has to get higher education. Again, not everyone will be admitted to higher education. Moreover, they can be admitted where there is technical education.
