Pallabi murder: Tk 30 lakh contract; killers planned homicide at former MP Awal's office

Dhaka, May 21: RAB has arrested MA Awal, a former Member of Parliament (MP) of Laxmipur-1 constituency and chairman of Islami Ganatantrik Party, for hacking to death a young man named Shahin Uddin (33) at Pallabi in the capital.

According to RAB, four-five days before the incident accused number two Abu Taher and accused number three Sumon met with prime accused Awal at his Kalabagan office and made final plans for the murder. The contract for the murder was Tk 30 lakh.

The information was shared by Khandaker Al Moin, director of the force's legal and media wing, during a news conference at the RAB media center in the capital's Karwan Bazar on Thursday (May 20th).

He said Md. Awal was arrested for being the mastermind in the heinous murder.

Sumon and Abu Taher finalised the plan at Awal's Kalabagan office and the former was awarded the contract. A team of 10-12 people were involved in the murder.

Moin said law enforcement officials arrested Hasan (19) during a raid at Haimchar area of Chandpur on Wednesday night. Almost 24 hours later, mastermind Md. Awal was arrested from Bhairab Sadar area. 

Another accused Md. Zohirul Islam was arrested from Baufol area of Patuakhali on Thursday morning.

Moin said the murderers, incluidng Sumon and Babu, planned on May 15 and assembled at the site on May 16 before inviting Shahin Uddin there.

Shahin was asked to come to the spot beforehand to talk about the settlement. At first, 10-12 people including Sumon, Monir, Manik, Hasan, Iqbal and Murad started hitting the victim randomly with sharp weapons. In the last stage of the incident, Monir stabbed in the upper part of the body and Manik in the knees and limbs and left Shahin there to die.

After that, the people who took part in the killings hid in different parts of the country.

The RAB official said former MP Awal was a real estate and land businessman. Under his protection, Sumon's miscreants used to occupy land and spread dominance in the area. For this they would get 10-12 thousand taka per month and in some cases extra money according to the work. The group was involved in extortion, looting, rickshaw token trade, drugs, gambling and other criminal activities in the area.
