Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 8: Finally, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport has introduced e-gate (automatic border control system) for e-passport holders.

From now on, passengers will be able to complete immigration on their own. The service was officially launched on Tuesday. Earlier on Monday (June 6) the gate was used experimentally.

The installation of this e-gate was inaugurated at Shahjalal Airport 11 months and eight days ago to facilitate the immigration process. The Department of Immigration and Passports (DIP) has set up an e-gate for inbound and outbound immigration at the airport.

Group Captain Mohammad Kamrul Islam, executive director of the airport, said the airport has 12 e-gates in the exit area and two in the arrival area. From now on passengers will be able to use e-gate completely. E-passport holders can go through e-gate at the end of verification.

Additional IGP of Special Branch (SB) Monirul Islam and Director of e-Passport Immigration Project Brigadier General Sadat Hossain were present during the inauguration. Passengers successfully completed the immigration process using the e-gate in front of them.

An airport official said that e-gate was installed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in 2019. But due to mismanagement and lack of coordination, it was not possible to launch it for a long time. Recently, the Home Minister has repeatedly urged the launch of e-gate. The Bangladesh Immigration and Passport Department and the Immigration Police started working in this regard.

According to the Department of Immigration and Passports, Bangladesh, when a person holding an e-passport goes in front of the e-gate with an e-passport, if he puts the e-passport in a certain place, the gate will open immediately. The camera will take pictures after standing under the gate according to certain rules. After that, if all goes well, passengers will be able to pass immigration in a few seconds. But if someone makes a mistake, a red light will turn on. Then the officials in charge will assist the person concerned in using the e-passport properly.
