Mitu Murder Case PBI registers case against Elias-Babul
Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Sept 28: The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) filed a case against four people including journalist Elias Hossain and former police SP Babul Akter.
The plaintiff, in this case, is PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumdar. The other two accused in the case are Babul Akhter's brother Md. Habibur Rahman Labu (45) and his father Md. Abdul Wadud Mia (72).
The case was registered under Digital Security Act and Special Powers Act at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Dhanmondi Police Station.
On Tuesday, PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumdar said that the accused have been accused of providing and spreading false and untrue information in the Mitu murder case, trying to turn the tide of the Mitu murder case, communal incitement, tarnishing the image of PBI and also tarnishing the image of Bangladesh Police.
Expatriate journalist Elias Hossain recently released a video about the investigation into the murder of Babul Akter's wife Mitu. In that video published on YouTube, he made several allegations against Banaj Kumar Majumder including torture of Babul on remand.
In the video posted by Elias Hossain, it is said that Banaj Kumar Majumdar has purposefully framed Babul Akter in this case. Besides, he was tortured in remand. He also accused the police of arranging false witnesses.
On the morning of June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of Babul Akter, was shot and stabbed by miscreants on her way to drop off her son at the school bus at Nizam Road in Chittagong city.
At that time, this incident was widely discussed throughout the country. Mitu's husband, the then Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter, was staying in Dhaka at the time of the incident. After the incident, he returned to Chittagong and filed a murder case against unknown persons at the Panchlaish Police Station.
Later, in the case filed by Babul Akter, PBI found his involvement in Mitu's murder. Mitu's father, former police inspector Mosharraf Hossain, filed a case at Panchlaish police station in Chittagong city, making Babul Akter the main accused on the day of submission of the final report in the previous case.
On the same day, PBI arrested Babul and sent him to court. Since then he has been in prison.
Since then two cases are also being investigated by the PBI.
Meanwhile, after the release of the video of Elias, Babul Akter filed a case against six police officers including Banaj Kumar Majumdar. However, the court rejected the application of his case.
