PM directs to set up factories, infrastructure without damaging environment

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, April 22: Mentioning that Bangladesh is at the highest risk of climate change, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed all concerned to build every industrial plant and all other facilities keeping in mind the need to protect the environment.

"We are taking steps to make everything from industrial plants to all other installations under construction environmentally friendly," she said.

She said this while laying foundation stone of Ghorashal Palash Urea Fertilizer Project and inaugurating four other development projects in Narsingdi district.

Mentioning that seven out of 10 most eco-friendly (green) garment factories in the world are in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina further said that her government is taking steps to consider the environment at every step.

Sheikh Hasina said her government has established 100 special economic zones across the country and Bangladesh gained recognition as a developing country only when the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence was celebrated in the country.

"We have a lot of responsibilities and we have to do that," she said.

The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of the Tk 10,460 crore project virtually from her official residence Ganobhaban. Others concerned attended the event from the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the capital and the Fertilizer Project site in Narsingdi.

At the same time, the Prime Minister inaugurated four more development projects including the 14-storey head office of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation at Tejgaon Industrial Area in the capital. Other development projects include expansion of Madaripur BSCIC Industrial Estate, setting up of Tools Institution under Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Center (BITAC) and installation of LED Light Assembling under Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC).

A documentary on these projects was shown at the beginning of the programme. Later, a book on Bangabandhu's thoughts on industrialization was unveiled by the Ministry of Industries.

The Prime Minister said the government is giving importance to the food processing industry to meet the growing demand of the domestic market as well as increase the export of food products.

"If we can increase the quality of food through the process, we will be able to meet the demand of the country and export it abroad. Now the local market is growing due to the increasing capacity of the people of the country," she said.
