PM Hasina releases commemorative stamp on Sheikh Kamal's birth anniversary

Dhaka, August 6: On the occasion of the 72nd birth anniversary of Bangabandhu's eldest son martyr Sheikh Kamal, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has released a commemorative stamp worth Tk 10, an opening envelope worth Tk 10 and a data card worth Tk 5. A function was organized at Ganobhaban on Thursday (August 5) to mark the occasion.

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar, Secretary to the Prime Minister's Office Md. Tofazzal Hossain Mia, Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Md. Afzal Hossain and Director General of the Postal Department Md. Siraj Uddin were present on the occasion.

Sheikh Kamal was born on 5 August 1949 in Tungipara, Gopalganj.

After completing his secondary education from Shaheen School and his higher secondary education from Dhaka College, Kamal passed BA Honours from the Department of Sociology, Dhaka University. He was a student of Sitar playing department of Chayanat. He formed 'Spondon Shilpi Gosthi' with his friends. Kamal was one of the founders of Dhaka Theater. He was established at Natangan of Dhaka University as an actor.

On the night of March 25, 1971, he left his house on Dhanmondi Road No. 32 and took part in the war of liberation. He was trained in the first war course in independent Bangladesh and was commissioned in the Mukti Bahini and served as the ADC of General Osmani, the Commander-in-Chief of the Liberation War. After independence, Sheikh Kamal retired from the army and concentrated on his studies.

From his childhood, he had a keen interest in various sports, including football, cricket, hockey and basketball. He was the founder of Abahani Sports Club, one of the best sports organizations in the subcontinent and the promoter of modern football in Bangladesh. Sheikh Kamal made an immense contribution to the development of the country's sports, including football and cricket, with his untiring efforts.

On July 14, 1975, he married Sultana Khuku, a well-known athlete. At the time of his martyrdom on 15 August 1975, he was an MA finalist in the Department of Sociology, Dhaka University and a member of the Central Committee of the Jatiya Chhatra League, an affiliate of the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League.
