PM inaugurates Rooppur Unit-2 reactor pressure vessel installation

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 20: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the installation of the Reactor Pressure Vessel (Nuclear Vessel) of Unit-II of the 2400 MW Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP), bringing Bangladesh closer to nuclear power generation.

The Prime Minister attended the inauguration ceremony organized at RNPP in Ishwardi, Pabna virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban on Wednesday.

According to the project plan, the first unit of the nuclear power plant will provide 1,200 MW of power in 2023 and the same amount of power from the second unit in 2024. About 53 percent financial progress and 55 percent physical progress of the project have been achieved. But the overall progress of the first unit is 70 percent.

The Rooppur project is being implemented by Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission with technical and financial support from Russia. The construction cost of the project, including manpower training, is USD 12.65 billion, and 90 percent of it is financed by Russia.

Earlier on October 10 last year, the Prime Minister inaugurated RPV in the first unit of RNPP. Which recognized Bangladesh as the 33rd country to generate electricity from nuclear energy.

Minister of Science and Technology Architect Yafes Osman and Director General of Russia's Atomic Energy Agency Rosatom Alexei Likhachev spoke on the occasion. Ziaul Hasan, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology gave the welcome speech. A documentary film on Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was screened on the occasion.
