After the Prime Minister, Awami League and allied organizations paid tribute to the martyrs who died on August 15, including Sheikh Russel, at Banani Cemetery. President Md. Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion of Sheikh Russel Day.

The Prime Minister said in her speech, "If Russel was alive, we would have got a great, visionary and ideal leader, of whom the country and the nation could be proud."

She said, "Sheikh Russel is not among us today. But there is his sacred memory. Among all the children in Bangladesh, I still find Russel. These children must be raised in Russel's spirit. May the children of Bangladesh grow up with the existence of such a bright child. Let them pour out their fierce hatred against the murderers. Let them come forward to build the golden Bangladesh of Bangabandhu's dream, I hope today."

The Prime Minister said, "On the occasion of the 60th birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of the greatest Bengali, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangamata Sheikh Fojilatunnesa Mujib, I remember him with deep love and utmost compassion and wish for the repose of his soul."

She said, "We lost the tender baby Russell on August 15, 1975, on a cruel, horrible and horrible night in history. The great architect of independent Bangladesh, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 18 members of his family were martyred that night by anti-independence, conspirators and traitors. Even the little baby Russell was not spared from the killers that day."
