Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 18: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday paid deep respect to the memory of the August 15 martyrs at Banani Cemetery in the capital on the occasion of Sheikh Russel Day.

The Prime Minister along with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana visited the Banani graveyard this morning and paid her respects to the memory of the martyrs by laying wreaths. After laying wreaths, they stood in silence for some time and sprinkled flower petals on the graves of the martyrs.

After that, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana recited Fateha and prayed for the souls of the martyrs of August 15.

Their mother Bangmata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, three brothers- Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russel and other martyrs of August 15 are buried in Banani graveyard.

Today is the 59th birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The day is being observed as Sheikh Russel Day across the country.

On the dark night of August 15, 1975, a group of misguided soldiers killed Bangabandhu, his wife and their three sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russel, most of Bangabandhu's family and three close relatives.

Bangabandhu's two daughters, the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, escaped with their lives as they were abroad at the time.
