PM Sheikh Hasina hopeful of UK's role in resolving climate crisis

Dhaka, June 3: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed hope that the United Kingdom will take the interests and priorities of countries at risk of climate change seriously in international forums.

She expressed this hope when COP-26 president Alok Sharma paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister at Ganobhaban on Wednesday. Later, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said this at a press briefing.

He said during the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh, as the current chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), hoped that the United Kingdom would take the interests and priorities of countries at risk of climate change seriously in international forums.

Quoting the Prime Minister, Ihsanul Karim said Bangladesh and some other countries would be affected by the adverse effects of global climate change. However, the amount of carbon emissions in Bangladesh is negligible.

Alok Sharma hoped that Bangladesh, under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina as the current President of CVF, would play an important role in the issue of climate change.

Ihsanul Karim said they both discussed climate funds and other issues. Alok Sharma emphasizes on the transformation into green energy. In this regard, the Prime Minister said, "We are moving towards green energy and 5.8 million solar power connections have been provided in our country. The government and the party have undertaken a massive tree planting program."

Regarding the coronavirus vaccination program, Alok Sharma said that the vaccination program is going well in the UK.

Regarding the immunization program, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh, despite being a very densely populated country, has taken various steps to keep the country's economy afloat in the face of this pandemic.

Since Alok Sharma will visit the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world, the Prime Minister also briefed him about the place. The COP-26 president invited the prime minister to attend the COP-26 conference in Glasgow next November.

Ambassador at Large Mohammad Ziauddin, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Kaikaus, Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK Saida Muna Tasnim and UK High Commissioner to Bangladesh were present on the occasion.
