PM to inspect flood situation in Sylhet tomorrow

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 20: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to visit Sylhet region on Tuesday to stand by the flood-hit people.

The Prime Minister's Office has confirmed that she will leave for Sylhet by helicopter on Tuesday morning.

According to sources, the Prime Minister will leave for Sylhet tomorrow morning. There she will inspect the flood situation. Express sympathy to the flood victims. At the same time she will take part in the programme of the Ministry of Relief and Disaster.

Meanwhile, Secretariat sources confirmed that State Minister for Relief and Disaster Management Dr. Enamur Rahman is leaving for Sylhet on Monday. He will also be there on Tuesday.

Cherrapunji in the eastern Khasi hills of the neighbouring Indian state of Meghalaya has received record rainfall for the third time in 122 years due to active monsoon conditions. Three days (June 15-17) of continuous rain in Assam and Meghalaya flooded the northeastern part of Bangladesh. This caused flood situation in almost all the districts of the division including Sylhet city. About 80 percent of Sylhet and more than 90 percent of Sunamganj were submerged.

In this situation,hundreds of thousands of people in those areas were displaced and they were taken to flood relief shelters. Older people, children and pregnant women are suffering the most. People are also in dire straits with the loss of crops and cattle. Due to the submergence of stoves in the flood waters, cooking has stopped in the homes of many people for the last few days. The food crisis has taken an extreme shape. There was wailing of potable water in the bottom of the tube well.

Visiting the flood-hit area in Sylhet on Sunday, Army Chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed said the army was doing everything possible to help the affected people. Meanwhile, army personnel from different cantonments including Chittagong, Comilla and Dhaka Savar have been deployed to help the flood victims. Many more have been put on standby.

Meanwhile, various political, social and voluntary organizations, including the Red Crescent, are standing by the people of the flood-hit areas and extending their helping hands.
