Polling underway for 231 local govt elections including Comilla, Mymensingh cities

Dhaka, March 9: Voting is underway for 231 local government elections including Comilla and Mymensingh City Corporations and six municipalities. Voting started from 8 am on Saturday (March 9). It will continue till 4 pm today.

Md. Atiyar Rahman, Deputy Secretary of the Election Management Branch of the Election Commission, said that general elections in Mymensingh City Corporation and by-elections for the vacancy of mayor in Comilla City and general elections of three municipalities (Patuakhali Municipality of Patuakhali District, Bakshiganj Municipality of Jamalpur District and Amtali Municipality of Barguna District) will be held in three municipalities (Mymensingh). Trishal Municipality of District, Munshiganj Municipality of Munshiganj District and Shivganj Municipality of Bogra District) By-elections will be held for the vacant post of Mayor. Also, a total of 231 posts in the local government is being polled on Saturday (March 9) with various by-elections.

Metropolitan Awami League President Md. Ikramul Haque Titu, District Awami League President Ehteshamul Alam, former city Awami League President Sadekul Haque Khan (Tiju), Jatiya Party candidate Shahidul Islam and former member of Central Krishak League agriculturist Rezaul Haque are contesting in this city election.

On the other hand, there are 27 mobile teams of police, APBN and Ansar, nine striking forces and two reserve teams in 27 wards of Comilla City. Besides, 27 RAB teams and 12 BGB platoons are deployed.

Four independent candidates - Tahsin Bahar, Nur-ur Rahman Mahmud Tanim, Mohammad Nizam Uddin and Md. Munirul Haque are contesting in this city election. In this two lakh 42 thousand 458 voters are getting the opportunity to vote in 105 centres. Among them 1 lakh 18 thousand 182 are male voters, 1 lakh 24 thousand 274 are female and two transgenders.
