President calls on Indonesia to play stronger role in Rohingya issue

Dhaka, Sept 7: President Md. Shahabuddin urged Indonesia to play a stronger role in solving the Rohingya problem. The President made this call during a meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the Jakarta Convention Center on Wednesday, September 6.

Later in the briefing, Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen said that in the meeting, President Md. Shahabuddin thanked the President of Indonesia for his invitation to join the ASEAN and East Asia Summit and his warm hospitality.

Referring to the excellent relations between Indonesia and Bangladesh, the President said that Bangladesh attaches great importance to the development of relations with Indonesia. Highlighting the development and progress of Bangladesh and the investment-friendly environment, the President urged Indonesian investors to invest in various sectors. Besides, the President said to import world-class products from Bangladesh to reduce the trade deficit between the two countries.

Referring to the Rohingya as a major problem for Bangladesh, the President expressed hope that Indonesia would play a stronger role in the repatriation of the Rohingya. At the same time, the President also called for quick acceptance of Bangladesh's proposal to become ASEAN's sectoral dialogue partner.

During the briefing, referring to the signing of memorandum of understanding between the two countries to increase cooperation in the energy, agriculture and health sectors, the foreign minister said that the two countries have expressed interest in working together for the development of these sectors.
