President directs Information Commission to be more proactive in stopping harassment in obtaining information

Dhaka, April 1: President Md. Shahabuddin has ordered the Information Commission to be more active so that no one is harassed in getting information.

He gave this direction to the Information Commission while receiving the Annual Report 2023 at Bangabhaban on Sunday.

The President said that it is the right of the people to get information...so that no one should be harassed in the process of getting the necessary information.

A four-member delegation led by Chief Information Commissioner Dr. Abdul Malek presented the Information Commission Annual Report 2023 to President Shahabuddin. Other members of the delegation were Information Commissioner Shahidul Alam Jhinuk, Masuda Bhatti and Commission Secretary Zubaida Nasreen.

Later, President's Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS that during the meeting, the Chief Information Commissioner briefed the President about various aspects of the annual report and the overall activities of the commission.

President Shahabuddin said that the role of Right to Information Act is very important to ensure transparency and accountability of state activities. He also said that the Information Commission should attend immediately and be diligent in fulfilling its duties in necessary cases.

At this time, the President thanked the Information Commission for being elected as an executive member of Bangladesh International Conference of Information Commissioners (ICIC). He expressed satisfaction with the overall functioning of the Information Commission.

The President expressed the hope that the Information Commission will strengthen its activities to ensure the constitutional and fundamental rights of the people and remove obstacles carefully.

The Chief Information Commissioner said that so far one lakh 56 thousand applications have been submitted and information has been provided in most of them.

He said that the commission is continuing its continuous efforts to create public awareness about the Right to Information Act at the grass root level.
