Dhaka, April 29: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called on the international community to provide more assistance to Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar to Bangladesh.

The Prime Minister made this call in an interview with Japan's public broadcaster NHK in Tokyo on Thursday. She then left Tokyo for Washington.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on Wednesday. They agreed to upgrade bilateral relations to strategic partnership. In 2017, many minority Rohingya Muslims crossed the border into Bangladesh to escape a military campaign against the Rohingya in Myanmar.

In the interview, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that due to the situation in Ukraine, the cost of running the refugee camp for about one million Rohingyas is increasing due to the increase in the price of fuel and food.

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh said that his government has already started discussions with the Myanmar Army regarding the repatriation of the refugees. Myanmar has agreed to take them back, but nothing has materialized so far.

Sheikh Hasina also said that she wants to complete an economic partnership agreement with Japan by 2026. She said Bangladesh has a large population of young people and there is a huge market in South and Southeast Asia.
