Prime Minister emphasizes on reforming existing roads

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, May 11: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that maintenance of existing roads should be given more importance than construction of new roads. She directed to stop the construction of new roads and pay attention to the maintenance of old and existing roads.

The Prime Minister gave these instructions at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday (May 10). Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting.

After the meeting, Planning Minister MA Mannan and State Minister for Planning Prof. Dr. Shamsul Alam briefed the media. The Planning Minister informed about the directive of the Prime Minister there.

Referring to the directives of the Prime Minister, the Planning Minister said that the Prime Minister has instructed the ECNEC meeting to increase the scope of maintenance of existing roads without constructing new roads.

The Prime Minister said Bangladesh has the highest road density in the world. New roads have to be maintained with breaks. Enough roads have been built in the country.

The ECNEC meeting on the same day approved 11 projects including Sheikh Kamal IT Training. The total cost for the implementation of these has been estimated at Tk 5,825.74 crore. Of this, Tk 3,963.38 crore will be spent from government funds, Tk 1,220.46 crore from implementing agencies and Tk 641 crore 90 lakh from foreign loan assistance.

It was informed at the press conference that so far 39 high-tech IT parks have been set up. The work of setting up software technology, IT business, training and incubation centers have been completed in seven places.
