Dhaka, March 26: Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has called upon the international community, including the United Nations, to recognize the day that Pakistan's military forces carried out genocide on the Bengali nation on March 25, 1971 as 'International Genocide Day'. She made this call in the president's speech at the Awami League Parliamentary Board meeting at Ganobhaban on Saturday (March 25).

The Prime Minister said, "Pakistani occupation forces started killing from this day (March 25, 1971). We want March 25 to be recognized as the International Day of Genocide. Therefore, I call on the international community, including the United Nations, to take action in this regard."

She said, "On the terrible night of March 25, the invading forces attacked the unarmed Bengalis. They carried out killings for nine months. In the war, 3 million martyrs sacrificed their lives and 200,000 mothers and sisters lost their dignity. In addition, 3 crore people became homeless due to the burning of their houses."

She further said, "Out of a total of 7 crore people, 3 crore became homeless and 1 crore took refuge in India as refugees."

Sheikh Hasina said, "The father of the nation started running the state from the ruins and built the war-torn country. He made Bangladesh a developing country within three years and seven months of being in power. But unfortunately he (Bangabandhu) was brutally assassinated on August 15, 1975. Not only him, his associates and four national leaders were also brutally murdered inside the Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975."

She said, "I want to say that the blood of martyrs never goes in vain. We have achieved independence and today we have achieved the status of a developing nation."

Paying deep respect to all the martyrs, the Prime Minister said that her government is committed to the martyrs, including the father of the nation, to make Bangladesh a developed and prosperous country. Awami League Parliamentary Board members were present in the meeting.
