Dhaka, June 6: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the doctors in Bangladesh to be by the side of the people with the vow of providing services to them.

"It's not just a profession," she said. "You serve the people and I want you to stand by the people with the vow of service."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made the remarks while addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) at Mohakhali in the capital on Monday morning and as the chief guest of the 14th Convocation 2022.

Sheikh Hasina attended the virtual function from her official residence Ganobhaban.

"I would like to say one thing to our medical staff - when a patient goes to a doctor for treatment, two words from the doctor can in many cases heal the patient or build their self-confidence," she said. "Assurances from the doctor, can heal a patient to an extent, that is the reality. So we have to pay special attention to this issue."

Mentioning the urgent need for research on medical science in Bangladesh, the Prime Minister in her speech advised the doctors to concentrate on this issue. "Our country has an outbreak of many diseases with the weather, climate and nature. It is equally important for us to free people from them," she said.

She cited the example of the father of the nation who established International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr, b) to cure cholera, which was rampant in the region at that time, and turned it into a high quality institution. Her government came to run the state and further developed it. As a result, the region is free of cholera outbreaks. Besides, she has taken initiative to protect human health from childhood by vaccinating against various diseases, including polio.

Mentioning that the doctors of our country are talented, she said, if the doctors of our country can go abroad and do so well, then why not do it in the country. Emphasizing on the importance of taking such steps so that our doctors can properly develop their talents in the country, the Prime Minister said, "You will get all the support you need for this."

BCPS also awarded honorary fellowships to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. On behalf of the Prime Minister, Zahid Malek accepted the golden jubilee fellowship and memento of BCPS.

Later, on behalf of the Prime Minister, Zahid Maleque handed over the Gold Medal to the BCPS Fellows from 2017 to 2022 and honorary fellowships to eminent personalities from home and abroad.
