Dhaka, March 23: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over the state's highest civilian honour Independence Award. The Prime Minister presented the Independence Award 2023 to 9 distinguished individuals and an organization in recognition of their glorious and successful contribution at the national level.

The Prime Minister presented the award at Osmani Smriti Auditorium in the capital on Thursday (March 23). The medal winners received their respective medals from the Prime Minister and the family members received the medals on behalf of the posthumous Freedom Award winners.

Earlier on March 9, the list of nominees for the Freedom Award was published in a circular of the Cabinet Department. This time, four people received awards in the field of 'Freedom and Liberation War', two in 'Research and Training'. Apart from this, one in 'Literature', one in 'Culture', one in 'Sports' and one in 'Social Service' have been given the highest state medal.

In the field of 'Freedom and Liberation War', brave freedom fighters Col. (Retd.) Samsul Alam, late Lt. AG Mohammad Khurshid, Shahid Khawaja Nizamuddin Bhuiyan and Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya (Bir Bikram) received the Freedom Award. On behalf of Samsul Alam, his wife Laila Bilkis and younger brother Hasan Moinuddin Bhuiyan on behalf of Khawaja Nizamuddin Bhuiyan received the award.

Late Dr. Muhammad Moinuddin Ahmed (Salim Al Deen) in the 'Literature' category and Pavitra Mohan Dey in 'Culture' and ASM Rakibul Hasan in 'Sports' received the Freedom Award. Selim Al Din's brother Borhan Uddin Ahmed took the award.

Directorate of Fire Service and Civil Defense received the award in the field of 'Social Service/Public Service'. The Prime Minister handed over the award to Brigadier General Md Main Uddin, Director General of the Directorate. Besides, Nadira Jahan (Surma Zahid) and Dr. Firdausi Qadri received the Freedom Award in the 'Research and Training' category.

The government has been giving this award every year since 1977 on the occasion of Independence Day on March 26. In case of Freedom Award, the awardee is given Tk 5 lakh, 50 gram gold medal of 18 carat quality, a replica of the medal and a certificate of appreciation.
